A basket of balut from Pateros is part of our childhood memories. Today we still hear calls of "balut, penoy" from itinerant vendors or see them on street corners waiting for their sukis to come by. Foreigners are usually dared to try balut, with the flavorful broth and tasty meat, taken with a pinch of salt. Balut has also gone gourmet in three variants: in brine, caldereta and afritada.

Disrupt

TechCrunch named the final seven winners of its 2011 version of the TechCrunch Disrupt show in San Francisco, handing the crown to Shaker, an avatar-based chat room based on a user's Facebook profile.

The winner of the Disrupt Cup won $50,000. The runner up was Prism Skylabs, which taps into a company's video cameras for real-time footage and analysis. The Audience Choice award went to Vocre, a real-time translation app for the iOS platform.

TechCrunch founder invested in Prism Skylabs via his Crunchfund, and is a pending investor in Shaker, according to TechCrunch.

The final seven: Bitcasa, Shaker, CakeHealth, TalkTo, Prism SkyLabs, Farmigo, and Trello.
Bitcasa claims that it will change the way in which people use their data and their computers with regards to consumer data. "What happens when you run out of space? You buy another USB stick, another hard drive, another DVD," said Tony Gauda, co-founder and chief executive officer, in perhaps the most enthusiastic presentation of the afternoon.

In 48 hours since the company launched on Monday, over 45,000 users signed up.

Pinoy Teachers - Asia's Lowest Paid

As the world commemorates World Teacher's Day today, a party-list representative lamented that Filipino teachers are among the lowest paid in Asia.Gabriela party-list Rep. Luz Ilagan, who taught at the Ateneo de Davao University for four decades, said "not only is it a dishonor, it is also an injustice for our teachers to teach amid conditions of scarcity and slave-like compensation."Citing a 2009 study by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), Ilagan said teachers in the country only receive a 10% to 15% increase in salary after 15 years of experience.

Salaries of teachers from Malaysia, Thailand and Japan almost doubled within the same period, she noted.

"Teachers must be justly compensated for their work. Our teachers are among the least compensated in the region," she said.

Whatever Time

Most people are far less productive than they think they are because they are under- or over-estimating the time it takes to complete a task. Be diligent in the present while focusing on what you want to achieve in the future.
