Total Lunar Eclipse

Did you catch the night of December 10's total lunar eclipse?

The best seats in the house for the total lunar eclipse spectacular was here in Asia.

A lunar eclipse occurs when the moon is positioned just right in its orbit to pass through Earth's shadow. Today, that occurred when Asia and the Pacific were facing right at the moon. Other regions of the world, including some areas of Europe and the western U.S. and Canada, could catch at least part of the show before sunrise or after sunset.

I watched the onset of the eclipse's total phase from our rooftop, but the clouds at my location closed in partway through the 51-minute window of totality. Did you see the moon's red glow?

So if it's a total eclipse, why didn't the moon go totally dark?

The lunar surface takes on that dusky appearance during a total eclipse because some sunlight is refracted around Earth by our planet's atmosphere. It's as if the glow of a thousand sunsets is directed toward the moon.

It'll be more than two years before we see another one. Although there'll be some partial eclipses of the moon in 2012 and 2013, our next dose of lunar eclipse totality won't come until April 15, 2014.

The word “lunatic” comes from the Latin ‘luna’ meaning a moon and can mean someone who goes mad with the changes of the moon.

However, it is usually associated with the old belief that if the moon shone on you while you were alseep, it sent you mad – you became a lunatic.

This is one reason why the old thatched roofs of the old houses back then came so far down over the windows, they were to prevent the moon shining on someone sleep.

Thus the origin of the word and a bit of history on the thatched roofs.

The total lunar eclipse from the other night must have triggered some sort of lunacy across the country. Let me cite down some examples:

Final Note/Huling Hirit:
A full moon is said to bring out a werewolf, also known as a lycanthrope, a mythological or folkloric human with the ability to shapeshift into a wolf or an anthropomorphic wolf-like creature, either purposely or after being placed under a curse. This transformation is often associated with the appearance of the full moon. What seems to be an ordinary human being turns into a creature often attributed with superhuman strength and senses, far beyond those of both wolves and men.

What kind of monster would it bring out if it’s a total lunar eclipse, where the moon is still full but a really a bit more dreary because of its red glow.
