In Defense of the PNoy

The “partying”, unwittingly revealed by showbiz personality Valerie Concepcion, drew flak from Twitter and Facebook users. They criticized Aquino who was merry-making while the number of deaths continues to rise in the disaster-hit Mindanao.

The President has been criticized in the past for not making his presence felt in provinces badly hit by typhoons.

Here are some of what the personalities have to say about the incident. Apparently, Pnoy’s spokespersons and family members, Abigail Valte, Edwin Lacierda, Herminio Coloma Jr, Ricky Carandang, Kris Aquino, Ballsy Aquino-Cruz, Pinky Aquino-Abellada, and even Valerie Concepcion already explained in behalf of the President.

As of this writing, we have heard not a word from Pnoy himself, as he is scheduled to visit the Typhoon Sendong affected areas in Northern Mindanao today Tuesday December 20, 2011.

“Done w/ work.. Tnx for having me.. J It was nice to see Pres. P-Noy laughing at my jokes & enjoying my performance.. :u ” – Valerie Concepcion (Valerie already deleted this tweet but sent another tweet to apologize. Please see below.)

“I just want to clarify that I was invited to perform at Malacañang's Christmas Party for their employees with their husbands/wives and kids. Yes, the president attended the gathering. I do not see anything wrong with that since its his obligation and responsibility being the head of Malacañang to be present and show his support for his hardworking employees and their respective families. But I believe that it doesn't mean that the president is not thinking of ways to help our kababayan(s) in Mindanao. It doesn't mean that the president is disregarding the plight of our fellow Filipinos. Let's not be too quick to judge. But if I, in any way, offended you guys and sounded insensitive, I am very sorry. It wasn't my intention to do either. I can't imagine how difficult life is for the people affected in Mindanao and how difficult it is to be the president of the Philippines at this moment. “The President stayed only for a few minutes in deference to the Mindanao flood. He just sat and watched for a few minutes the party and then he left the party immediately, The President was very well aware. Nung pagpunta pa lang po ni Pangulong Aquino, when he dropped by in that particular Christmas party of the PSG, he immediately informed the head of the PSG, Colonel Chito Dizon, that he was just dropping by to say hello to the family members. As you know, marami po sa mga PSG members, ‘yung kanilang pamilya ay galing pa po ng probinsya at gusto pong magpasalamat ni Pangulong Aquino” - Secretary Edwin Lacierda, Presidential Spokesperson

“Kapag tatakbo siya sa lugar na iyon, ang mga nagre-rescue, imbis na maka-rescue ng mga tao, paghahandaan ang pagdating niya. Ayaw niya makagulo ng ganoon so as early as Saturday, alam na natin na Tuesday ilalatag nila lahat” -  Pinky Aquino-Abellada, sister of Noynoy Aquino

Deputy Presidential Spokesperson Abigail Valte said the President "wants to make sure that national agencies and those on the ground have a concerted plan" in response to the crisis. This staement to defend PNoy for not immediately hopping on a plane and showing up at the affected areas.

Communications Secretary Ricky Carandang said the PSG had considered canceling the party owing to the Mindanao tragedy but it was too late because family members had already arrived.

He said reports about the President’s presence at the party were “exaggerated” and “taken out of context.”

Both Carandang and Lacierda said Mr. Aquino had in fact canceled Monday night’s Christmas party for his Cabinet “in deference to the Mindanao flooding and Mindanao casualties.”

Actions Speak Louder Than Words?

Herminio Coloma  also said in defense of Pnoy that "Actions speak louder than words", That is very true.

But many times, a few words of sympathy would already have a huge effect to people in distress. We need words of comfort to help us through our misery and struggles. We needs words of encouragement to keep us going strong and determined. We need words of assurance to give us hope despite all of these unfortunate circumstances.

If we don’t hear a single word, our minds wander. Is he aware of the tragedy that befall us? Does he care we loss our homes and loved ones? Did he forsake us for other priorities?

Pnoy, speak up!...and let us know you are there for us.

Huling Hirit/Final Note:

"Delicadeza is one word which has not changed its meaning in the Philippines for centuries. The concept has the same meaning whether one is from Luzon, Visayas or Mindanao. Because nearly everyone knows what it means, no one has bothered to come out with a standard definition, or translate it into law. Nonetheless, the concept of delicadeza can be discerned in laws, rules and regulations concerning behavior of public officials.

Delicadeza refers to behavior anchored on generally accepted moral standards. Thus, it is often said that what is considered legal may not necessarily be moral.

To be branded “without delicadeza” is probably the strongest insult that one can hurl at a public official. This is because the word is associated with honor. In many cultures, people die to protect their honor.

During the past few years however, the concept of delicadeza has been changing. Its meaning has been changed by people in authority. Suddenly, many don’t know what the word means! A concept which is so clear that it is taken for granted is now murky and obtuse."
