The Philippine government has blocked the former president Gloria Macapagal Arroyo and her husband from leaving the country and has said it will appeal a supreme court order allowing them to travel abroad for medical treatment.

Accompanied by her husband and son, Arroyo arrived at Manila airport in an ambulance  and was wheeled into a departure hall wearing a face mask and a neck brace.

Presidential spokesman Edwin Lacierda said the former first couple, who are being investigated for alleged corruption and electoral fraud, would be treated with dignity but "we will be firm in our decision not to allow them to leave the country".

"This is all high drama. They want the public to sympathise with them," he said.



Is Gloria Macapagal Arroyo fishing for symphaty?

Arroyo claims that she is not playing up or exagerrating her condition - sustained after an operation on her cervical spine at St. Luke's Hospital in Taguig city, the same hospital where titanium implants and bone substitute were used to rebuild her spine.

The former President underwent revision surgery after doctors found out that the implants had been dislodged due to her “inherent bone problem."

Cervantes admitted that Arroyo's "genetic make up is very rare" to explain why operation on Arroyo had to be postponed several times in the past.

Doctors earlier had to remove four of her cervical bones and replace it with bone substitutes held in place by titanium implants.

The titanium implants were later dislodged by what was thought to be an infection.

The doctors later found out that her weak bones caused the implants to be dislodged.

The doctors then had to chip off part of Mrs. Arroyo's pelvic bone and implant it on the affected part of the spine.

Now Arroyo claims that she would be needing additional medical treatment from  foreign specialists which their camp claims could not be provided locally in the country. The Philippine doctors were dismayed by this statement saying that there are specialists here in the country that can treat Arroyo so she does not really need to leave.

Photos of Arroyo were released by lawyer Estelito Mendoza, the former Solicitor General of the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos, who has become the lawyer of last resort for appealing to the Supreme Court. The photos show the  former President looking blank, her head trapped in a "halo vest" or a neck-brace with metal rod supports.. It's a photo meant to tug at your heart-strings -

Should people feel very sorry for Mrs. Arroyo now?

Should people just say -- go ahead, you need a break. Go abroad.

But what about justice? And accountability?

And how can we be sure that halo vest is not just a mere prop now?

Perhaps Mrs Arroyo should publicly release her official medical records covering the last four years -- at least -- so that a panel of doctors can really determine her medical condition.

Mendoza has petitioned the Supreme Court to step in and allow her to travel, and later a TRO was issued by the SC.
